Best answer

The correct option (B) {(xy)/(y – x)}

Explanation:

 effective R when in parallel is x

Hence

(1/R1) + (1/R2) + (1/R3) + --- {1/(Rn–1)} + (1 / Rn) = (1/x) (1)

 if nth resistor is removed then.

(1/R1) + (1 / R2) + ---- {1/(Rn–1)} = (1/y)    (2)

 (1) – (2) gives

(1/Rn) = (1/x) – (1/y)

∴ (1 / Rn) = {(y – x)/(xy)} i.e. Rn = {(xy)/(y – x)}
