In general, heredity defines a person's potential based on the genotypes inherited from that person's parents. Environmental factors influence how that potential is realized. In other words, heredity determines our reaction range, while environmental factors influence what kind of characteristics we would eventually express. For example, studies have found that 70-80% of variations in intelligence can be attributed to genetics and that malnutrition (an environmental factor) can negatively affect a person's intellectual development.
