Light of wave–length λ is incident on a slit of width d. The resulting diffraction pattern is observed on a screen placed at a distance D. The linear width of the principal maximum is equal to the width of the slit, then D = __________ .

Best answer

The correct option is (A) (d2 / 2λ).

Explanation:

Given : linear width of principle maximum = width of slit hence

∴ (2λ / d) D = d

∴ D = (d2 / 2λ) Hence option A.
