The solution of the pair of equations: 0.25x + 0.6y = 0.7 and 0.3x – 3.5y = 2.95 is

(a) x = 4, y = 0.5

(b) x = – 4, y = –0.5

(c) x = 4, y = 0.5

(d) x = 4, y = –0.5

Best answer

Correct option is (d) x = 4, y = –0.5

0.25x + 0.6y = 0.7    ........(1)

0.3x − 3.5y = 2.95    .....(2)

Multiply (1) by 3 and (2) by 2.5, we get

0.75x + 1.8y = 2.1         .......eq3

0.75x − 8.75y = 7.375    ........eq4

Subtracting both equations, we get

10.55y = −5.275

y = −0.5

Substitute the value of y in (1),

0.25x −0.3 = 0.7

0.25x = 0.10

x = 4

Hence, x = 4 and y = −0.5.
