A sports club has 130 members. An increase of 10% in the number of men and 20% in the number of ladies brought up the membership to 148. How many men and ladies were there originally ?

Let the number of men be x and women be y

Given, x + y = 130  .......(1)

And 1.1x + 1.2y = 148  .......(2)

Multiplying equation  (1) with 1.1 we get, 

1.1x + 1.1y = 143 ...... (3)

Subtracting equation (3) from (2), we get 

0.1y = 5 

⇒ y = 50

Substituting y = 50 in the equation (1), we get 

x + y = 130

⇒ x = 80

Hence, the number of men = 80 and number of women = 50
