This is due to (i) transition elements provide a large surface area with free valencies or active sites for the 'activity‘ of the reactants to be adsorbed & increase the reactant concentration, on the surface to increase the rate of the reaction.

(ii)Transition elements have variable oxidation states to form unstable intermediate compound with the reactant following lower activation energy path to form the products & catalyst is regenerated.
