Phenyl methyl ether reacts with HI to form methyl iodide and phenol not phenyl iodide and methyl alcohol. Give reasons.

The reaction incolves the protonation of ether by acid followed by nucleophillic substitution by halide ion on the protonated ether.

The halide ion attacks on the smaller alkyl group due to less steric. That is why in this reaction methyl iodide and phenol are formed and not methanol and phenyl iodide.
