K2Cr2O7 acts as an oxidizing agent. In acid medium it undergoes reduction to Cr3+

Cr2O72- + 14H++ 6e- → 2Cr3+(green) + 7H2

Eg: acidified K2Cr2O7 will oxidize

(a) Fe2+ to F3+

Cr2O72- + 6Fe2+ + 14H+ → 2Cr3+ + 6Fe3+ + 7H2

(b) Iodide to iodine

Cr2O72- + 6I- + 14H+ → 3I2 + 2Cr3+ + 7H2O
