A mass of 2 kg is suspended with thread AB. Thread CD of the same type is attached.To the other end of 2 kg mass. 

(i) Lower end of the lower thread is pulled gradually, hander and hander is the downward direction so as to apply force on AB. Which of the thread will break & why ?

(ii) If the lower thread is pulled with a jerk, what happens ?

(i) Thread AB breaks down we pull the lower thread slowly then upper thread would break. This is because already the upper thread is having tension due to weight of the 2 kg mass. Addition tension is applied to this thread by pulling. Hence chances are more for upper thread to get broken first 

(ii) In second case as pulling with jerk is given now more chances for second thread to get broken As sudden impact is given to the hanging mass then due to conservation of momentum the mass would go upwards instantly and tension would be more on the lower thread and it gets broken first.
