The weight of the wire W = Alρg, where, A is area of cross section of the wire, l is the maximum length and ρ is the density of the wire. Therefore, the breaking stress developed in the wire due to its own weight W/A =  ρlg. We are told that breaking stress is 4.0 x 108 Nm–2. Hence
