A railway carriage of mass 9000 kg moving with a speed of 36 km h–1 collides with a stationary carriage of same mass. After the collision, the carriages get coupled and move together. What is their common speed after collision ? What type of collision is this ?

Best answer

m1 = 9000 kg, u1 = 36 km/h = 10 m/s

m2 = 9000 kg, u2 = 0, v = v1 = v2 = ?

By conservation of momentum :

As total K.E. after collision < Total K.E. before collision

∴ Collision is inelastic.

As per law of conservation of linear momentum,

Total initial and total final momentum remains equal.

Initial momentum = 9000×30 kg km/h+ 0= 9000 ×30 kg-km/h

Since the mass is doubled after collision as both wagons get joined, in order to keep momentum same the velocity of system post collision becomes half I.e 15 km/h

By error I have taken 30 kmph that's why got 15kmph for 36 kmph as per question the velocity is 18kmph
