A mass M attached to a spring oscillates with a period of 2 s. If the mass is increased by 2 kg, the period increases by one second. Find the initial mass M assuming that Hooke’s law is obeyed.

Since T = 2π √m/k , we have in the first case 2 = 2π √ M/k and in the second case

Solving for M from these two equations we get M = 1.6 kg
