A long light piece of spring steel is clamped at its lower end and a 1 kg ball is fastened to its top end (Fig. 1.7). A force of 5 N is required to displace the ball 10 cm to one side as shown in the figure. Assume that the system executes SHM when released. (a) Find the force constant of the spring for this type of motion. (b) Find the time period with which the ball vibrates back and forth.

(a) k = External Force/Displacement = 5N/0.1 m = 50 N/m
