Linear expansion: The coefficient of linear expansion of the material of a solid rod is defined as the increase in length per unit length per degree rise in temperature. 

Superficial expansion: Coefficient of superficial expansion is defined as the increase in surface area per unit surface area per degree rise in temperature.
