The main difference between centriole and centrosome is that centriole is the microtubule unit which forms the centrosome whereas centrosome is an organelle in the cytoplasm which is made up of two centrioles.

Centrosome |
Centriole |
Definition |
An organelle made of two centrioles |
A structure made of microtubules that are organized in a particular way |
Size |
Variable, bigger than a centriole, based largely on the extent of the pericentriolar material |
It has dimensions of about 200 nm wide and 500 nm long |
Formation |
Pericentriolar material organizes and arranges centrioles into centrosome |
Proteins starting with SPD-2 and SAS-4, SAS-5, SAS-6 and others |
Location |
Near the nucleus of protist and animal cells |
Near the nucleus and surface of the cell membrane in animals and protist cells |
Function |
Produces spindle fibers during cell divisions; plays a role in intracellular transport |
Forms a centrosome to produce the spindle during cell division; forms basal bodies that produce cillia and flagella |
