There are two types of waves :
1. Mechanical waves: These waves require material medium for their propagation.
For example : sound waves, waves in stretched string etc.
2. Non-mechanical waves or electromagnetic waves : These waves do not require any material medium for their propagation.
For example : light waves, x-rays etc.
