A mirror, 1 m in length, hangs from a wall. A man stands at a distance of 2 m from the mirror. What is the vertical dimension of that part of the opposite wall which the man can see in the mirror without changing the position of his head? The opposite wall is at a distance of 4 m from the mirror.

Answer: 3m.

Explanation:

The image of the wall will be at a distance l2 = 4m behind the mirror. If the eye is at point A (Fig.), then only the

rays coming from points on the image segment DE can enter it. Thus, the segment of the wall seen in the mirror will have the vertical dimension
