1. Second visit of the Prince to the city: The Prince Siddhartha wanted to see the city as it was. He put on the dress of a merchant and went to the city with Channa. It was his second visit. Nobody could recognise him. The Prince saw different sights in the city. Channa explained him why it all happened.
2. Procession of the dead body and other people : In the meantime the Prince saw a dead body. Four men were carrying it on a bier on their shoulders. Some people were going behind it. They were lamenting. One of them had an earthen bowl in his hand. There were lighted coals in it. They were going to a river bank crying “Ram, Ram, o Ram, etc.”
3. Pyre and cremation of the dead body : On the river bank there was a heap of wood. They laid the dead body on it. Then they put some heavy and thick twigs of wood on it. Then they lit fire on the four corners of the pyre. Soon the whole of the heap of wood turned into ashes. Only some white bones were there in the ashes. The Prince saw this scene and lamented very much. Channa told him that this is the end which every living man meets. The scene moved Siddhartha the most.’
