Compute the fractional change in volume of a glass slab when subjected to a hydraulic pressure of 10 atmosphere. Bulk modulus of elasticity of glass = 37 x 109 N/m2 and 1 atm = 1.013 =x 105 Pa.

P = 10 atm = 10 x 1.013 x 105 Pa, K = 37 x 109 N/m2

Vol. strain =  Bulkmodulus/Stress

= P/K = 10 x 1.013 x 105/37 x 109 = 2.74 x 10-5

∴ Fractional change in volume = ΔV /V = 2.74 x 10-5
