A piece of copper having a rectangular cross section 15.2 mm x 19.1 mm is pulled in tension with 44,500 N force producing only elastic deformation. Calculate the resulting strain. Given: Yc = 1.2 × 1011 N/m2 .

A = 15.2 x  19.2 mm2 = 15.2 × 19.2 x 10–6 m2

F = 44,500 N

Strain = F/AY = 44500/15 .2 x 19.1 x 10-6 x 1.2 x 1011

 = 0.001277
