The projectile fired at any angle above the horizontal would have zero kinetic energy at maximum height in its vertical component since the final velocity in that direction is itself zero. The kinetic energy at the highest point will only consist of half the square of the horizontal component of the initial velocity multiplied by the mass of the object. In other words, the total kinetic energy at maximum height is much less than the initial kinetic energy.
