Why do alkali metals form unipositive ions and impart characteristic colours to flame?

As removal of IInd electron from inert gas configuration requires very high energy, therefore, they form unipositive ions. As IE1 of these metals are low, the excitation of electrons can be done by providing the less energy. This much of energy can be given by Bunsen flame.
