Hormones are the chemical substances which coordinate and control the activities of living organisms and also their growth. The hormone secreted by thyroid is thyroxine. Its function is to regulate the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins in the body so as to provide the best balance for growth. The use of iodised salt is advised to us because iodine is necessary for the thyroid gland to produce thyroxine hormone. Thyroxine regulates carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism which is required for growth. Deficiency of iodine in the body causes disorder like swollen neck and disease called goitre.
