SO2 + 2OH-  ⇄ SO42- + 2H+ + 2e bar : reaction proceeds in forward direction as OH- concentration increases 

SO2 + 2H2O ⇄ SO42- + 4H+ + 2e bar : as H+ concentration increases the reaction proceeds in backward direction
