A solid shaft of mild steel 200 mm in diameter is to be replaced by hollow shaft of alloy steel for which the allowable shear stress is 22% greater. If the power to be transmitted is to be increased by 20% and the speed of rotation increased by 6%, determine the maximum internal diameter of the hollow shaft. The external diameter of the hollow shaft is to be 200 mm.

Best answer

Solid shaft dia d = 200 mm

Outer dia of Hollow shaft = do = 200 mm

Inner dia of Hollow shaft = di = ?

Allowable shear stress ιH = 1.22 ι

Power transmitted PH = 1.20 P

Shaft speed NH = 1.06 NS

Now use PH = 1.20 P

i.e.; 2π.NHTH/60 = 1.2 [2π.NSTS/60]

NHTH = 1.2 NSTS

Since NH = 1.06NS, putting this values

1.06 NSTH = 1.2 NST

TS = (1.06/1.2)TH ...(i)

Since T = (σ/16)D3max

(σ/16)d3S = (1.06/1.2) [(σ/16)(dO4 – di4)/dO].ι

putting ιH = 1.22 ι

(σ/16)d3S = (1.06/1.2) [(σ/16)(dO4 – di4)/dO].1.22ι

2003 = (1.06/1.2)(1.22) [(2004 – di4)/200]

di = 104 mm
