For a car taking a turn on a horizontal surface, let N1 and N2 be the normal reactions of the road on the inner and outer wheels respectively.

(a) N1 is always greater than N2

(b) N2 is always greater than N1

(c) N1 is always equal to N2

Correct Answer is: (b) N2 is always greater than N1.

Let O be the center of curvature of the road and C be the center of mass on the car. F1 and F2 are the forces of friction on the inner and outer wheels respectively. The torques due to N1, F1 and F2 about C are clockwise; they must balance the anticlockwise torque due to N2 about C. As N1 and N2 are equidistant from C, N2 > N1.
