Sn2+ compounds like SnO and SnCl2 are well known reducing agents, while PbO2 acts as an oxidizing agent. Which of the following statements support these reactivities?

I. SnO is more stable than SnO2

II. Sn4+ is more stable than Sn2+

III. Pb4+ is more stable than Pb2+

Best answer

Correct answer is (C) II and IV

Sn+4 is more stable than Sn+2 & Pb+2 is more stable than Pb+4

So, Sn+2 acts as reducing agents & Pb+4 acts as oxidising agents.

Above fact can also be explain by inert pair effect.
