It is a well known fact that during a  total solar eclipse the disk of the moon almost completely covers the disk of the sun. From this fact and from the information you can gather from examples on the NCERT book, determine the approximate diameter of the moon.

Here, CD = diameter of the Sun

AB = diameter of moon and

E = position of Earth

As Δs CDE and ABE are similar,

we have AB/CD = BE/DE or AB = BE/DE X CD

Here, BE = 3.8452 x 108 m,

DE = 1.496 x 1011 m

and CD = 13.92 x 108

Hence, AB = (3.8452 x 108 x 13.92 x 108/ 1.496 x 10-11)

= 3.58 x 103 km.
