Some people were feared by the effect of easily available printed books because rebellious and irreligious thoughts might spread and the authority of 'valuable literature' would be destroyed.

(i) Europe : In 15L7, the religious reformer Martin Luther wrote Ninety Five Theses criticising many of the practices and rituals of the Roman Catholic church and challenged the Church to debate his ideas.

(ii) India : An intense controversy between social and religious reformer and the Hindu orthodox was developed over matters such as widow immolation, monotheism, Brahmanical piothood and idolatry.
