Equal weights of ethane and hydrogen are mixed in an empty container at 25ºC. Determine the fraction of the total pressure exerted by hydrogen -

(1) 16/30 

(2) 15/16

Correct Answer is: (2) 15/16

Let the wt. of ethane and H2 = w gm

∴ No. of moles of C2H6 = W/30

No. of moles of H2 = W/2

Total no. of moles = w/30 + w/2 = 16w/30

Mole fraction of H2 = w/2 x 30/16w = 15/16
