Silver nitrate test: A portion of the stock solution is boiled with dil. HNO3, cooled and silver nitrate is added. A white precipitate soluble in ammonium hydroxide shows the presence of chlorine. A pale yellow precipitate slightly in ammonium hydroxide shows the presence of bromine. A yellow precipitate insoluble in ammonium hydroxide shows the presence of iodine.
