Organic compound containing phosphorous is fused with sodium peroxide. The phosphorus of the compound is oxidised to phosphate. The fused mass is extracted with water and filtered. The filtrate containing sodium phosphate is boiled with nitric acid and then treated with ammonium molybdate. A yellow solution of precipitate indicates the presence of phosphorus.
