If A(-1, 3), B(1, -1) and C(5, 1) are the vertices of a triangle ABC, find the length of median through A.

Let AD be the median through A.

As, AD is the median, D is the mid-point of BC

So, the coordinates of D are (1 + 5/ 2, -1 + 1/ 2 ) = (3 , 0)

Therefore,

Length of median AD = √[(3 + 1)2 + (0 – 3)2

= √[(4)2 + (-3)2

= √[16 + 9] 

= √25 

= 5 units
