Case i) The force and displacement are perpendicular to each other. So S = 90°
Work done = FScos θ°
= FScos 90°
= FS × 0 = 0
(∵ cos90° = 0)
Case ii) The force and displacement are in the same direction so θ = 0°
Work done = FScos θ°
= FScos 90°
= FS × 1 = FS
(∵ cos θ° = 1)
That is the work done is positive.
Case iii) The force and displacement in opposite direction θ = 180°
Workdone = FScos θ°
= FScos 180°
= FS × -1 = FS
(∵ cos 180° = -1)
That is workdone is negative.
