Best answer

(i) If p = 0 then 5(0) + 2 = 17, 0 + 2 ≠ 17
If p = 1 then 5(1) + 2 = 17, 5 + 2 ≠ 17
If p = 2 then 5(2) + 2 = 17, 10 + 2 ≠ 17
If p = 3 then 5(3) + 2 = 17, 15 + 2 ≠ 17
∴ p = 3 is the solution to the given equation 5p + 2 = 17.

(ii) If m = 0 then 3(0) – 14
0 – 14 = – 14 ≠ 4
3m – 14 = 4
If m = 1 then 3(1) – 14
3 – 14 = -11
If m = 2 then 3(2) – 14
6 – 14 = – 8
If m = 3 then 3(3) – 14 = -5
If m = 4 then 3(4) – 14 = -2
If m = 5 then 3(5) – 14 = 1
If m = 6 then 3(6) – 14 = 4
LHS = RHS
∴ m = 6 is the solution to the given equation 3m – 14 = 4.
