In a fuel cell methanol is used as a fuel and oxygen is used as an oxidising the reaction is

 ch3oh(l) + 3/2 O2 (g) ———> CO2(g) + 2 H2O(l)

At 298 K standard Gibbs energy of formation of methanol, H2O and CO2 are - 166.2, - 237.2 and -394.4 KJmole-1 respectively. If standard enthalpy of combustion of methanol is - 76 kilo joule per mole efficiency of fuel cell will be?

The reaction for the combustion of methanol is:

The efficiency of conversion of Gibbs free energy into useful work.

or efficiency =−702.6−/726 ×100

= 97%

The reaction for combustion of methanol is:
CH3OH(l)+23O2(g)⟶21CO2(g)+2H2O(l)

ΔGreactiono=[ΔGfoCO2(g)+2ΔGfoH2O(l)]−[ΔGfoCH3OH(l)+23ΔGfoO2(g)]

[−394.36+2(−237.13)]−[−166.27+0]

=−702.35kJmol−1

The efficiency of conversion of Gibbs free energy into useful work

=ΔHreactionoΔGreactiono×100=−726−702.35×100=96.7
