The mixture of CO and H2 thus produced is known as water gas or synthesis gas.

C(s) + H2O(g) ---> CO(g) + H2(g)

Water gas is an important industrial fuel. Carbon monoxide in water gas can undergo further combustion forming carbon dioxide with the liberation of heat.
