Best answer
Sigma Bond Pi-Bond
1. It is formed by end to end overlapping of half atomic orbitals. Overlapping involves s-s, s-p, p-p orbitals 1. It is formed by sidewise overlapping of two half filled p-orbitals
2. Overlapping takes place to large extent, so bond formed is a strong bond. 2. Overlapping takes place to lesser extent, so bond formed is a weak bond.
3. molecular orbital is symmetrical about inter nuclear line. 3. molecular orbital is discontinuous and consists of two charged cloud above and below plane of atoms.
4. free rotation about sigma bond is possible. 4. Free rotation about pi-bond is not posiible.
5. The bond may be present between two atoms along with pi-bond 5. The bond is always present between two atoms in addition to sigma bond.
6. s-orbital can participate in formation of sigma bond. 6. s-orbital can not participate information of pi-bond.
