An observer 1.5 m tall is 30 m away from a chimney. The angle of elevation of the top of the chimney from his eye is 60°. Find the height of the chimney.

From figure: Let AB be the position of the observer and CD be the height of the tower say h mtrs.

AC = BE = 30 m

From right triangle BED:

tan 60° = DE/BE

√3 = DE/BE

=> h – 1.5 = 30√3

=> h = 53.4 (approx.)

Height of the chimney is 53.4 m
