The narrator gained a profit of forty-nine pounds and ten shillings. Due to the good behaviour of the dealer, he thought to give him half of the profit. After the third thoughts on it, he bargains with his own soul, ‘Why put a premium on ineptitude?’ Now he says ‘ten pounds’. Again he bargains, ten pounds would put him above himself. Five pounds would be plenty. This time he bargains and asks himself, ‘no, giving a large part of it (profit) would mean the insult of the Goddess of Business. So a douceur of one pound will meet the case. And finally, he quits the idea of one pound too. He bargains and asks his own soul that such bargains are all part of the business. The fact is that the narrator is so clever that he further thinks that it would be a crime to injure such a good-natured man by offering some gift out of his profit.
वर्णनकर्ता ने उनचास पाउण्ड व दस शिलिंग का लाभ कमाया। उस विक्रेता के अच्छे व्यवहार के कारण उसने उसे उस लाभांश का आधा हिस्सा देने का सोचा। इस पर पुर्नविचार करने के पश्चात उसने अपनी स्वयं की आत्मा से मोल-भाव किया, ‘अयोग्यता को लाभ क्यों?’ अब वह कहता है, ‘दस पाउण्ड’। वह फिर मोल भाव करता है, दस पाउण्ड से तो उसका दिमाग ही चढ़ जायेगा। पाँच पाउण्ड पर्याप्त रहेंगे। इस बार वह मोलभाव करता है।और स्वयं से कहता है, नहीं, इसे लाभांश का एक बड़ा हिस्सा उसे देने का अर्थ होगा व्यापार की देवी का अपमान। इसलिए उसके लिए एक पाउण्ड के उपहार से ही काम चल जाएगा। और अन्त में वह उस एक पाउण्ड के विचार को भी त्याग देता है। वह मोलभाव करता है और अपनी स्वयं की आत्मा से ही कहता है कि इस प्रकार के मोलभाव व्यापार के अंग होते हैं। तथ्य यह है कि वर्णनकर्ता इतना चालाक है कि वह यह सोचता है। कि ऐसे अच्छे विचारों वाले व्यक्ति को अपने अर्जित लाभ में से कुछ रकम उपहार स्वरूप भेजना एक तरह का अपमानपूर्ण कार्य होगा।
