Saheb is a small boy who belongs to a family of rag-pickers. Children like him are cursed to live a life of sheer poverty. They are devoid of even the basic needs of life. They live in poorly built hutments amidst lots of filth. What to say of nutritious food and proper clothing, even fresh air and water are a luxury to them. Their areas of living are devoid of drainage, so the danger of diseases always haunt them. Poverty forces them to live in very unhygienic conditions. Right from a very early age, they get engaged in rag-picking and other such menial jobs. Good health and education are not even in their dreams. They are so busy with their day to day life that they don’t even think of ways for a better life.
साहेब एक छोटा लड़का है जिसका परिवार कचरा बीनने का काम करता है। उसके जैसे बच्चे घोर गरीबी को। जीवन जीने को अभिशप्त हैं। वे जीवन की मूलभूत आवश्यकताओं से भी वंचित हैं। वे टूटी-फूटी झोंपड़-पट्टियों में अत्यधिक गन्दगी के बीच रहते हैं। पोषक भोजन व पर्याप्त कपड़ों का तो कहना ही क्या, उनके लिए तो ताजी हवा व जल भी विलासिता की वस्तुएँ हैं।
उनके रहने के स्थानों पर पानी की निकासी की कोई व्यवस्था नहीं होती है, इसलिए उन पर हमेशा बीमारियों का खतरा मँडराता रहता है। गरीबी उन्हें बहुत अस्वास्थ्यकर स्थितियों में रहने को बाध्य कर देती है। बहुत छोटी आयु से ही वे कचरा बीनने या इसी प्रकार के अन्य छोटे-मोटे कामों में लग जाते हैं। अच्छे स्वास्थ्य व शिक्षा का तो वे स्वप्न भी नहीं देखते। वे अपने दिन-प्रतिदिन के जीवन में इतने व्यस्त रहते हैं कि वे अच्छे जीवन के तरीकों पर विचार भी नहीं करते हैं।
