In the year 1917, the condition of the farmers of Champaran was very pitiable. Gandhiji visited the secretary of the British landlords’ association who denied to give him any information. Then he went to the British official commissioner but he threatened and advised him to leave the place. But Gandhiji did not leave. He was served a notice to quit Champaran but Gandhiji disobeyed the order. He was summoned to the court the next day. On the next morning, thousands of peasants gathered to support Gandhiji. All the advocates were also ready to follow him to jail. When Gandhiji saw that the public was ready to support him and to go to jail with him in the protest against the policy of the government, he exclaimed, “The battle of Champaran is won.”
सन् 1917 में चम्पारण के किसानों की दशा अत्यंत दयनीय थी। गाँधीजी ब्रिटिश लैण्डलॉर्ड एसोसिएशन के सेक्रेटरी से मिले जिसने उन्हें कोई भी सूचना देने से मना कर दिया। तब वे ब्रिटिश अधिकारी कमिश्नर के पास गए जिसने उन्हें धमकी दी और उस स्थान से चले जाने की सलाह दी। परन्तु गाँधीजी नहीं गये। उन्हें एक नोटिस थमा दिया गया जिसके अनुसार उन्हें चम्पारण छोड़ने का आदेश मिला, पर उन्होंने इस आदेश की अवहेलना कर दी। उन्हें अगले दिन न्यायालय में उपस्थित होने का कानूनी आदेश मिल गया। दूसरे दिन प्रात:काल गाँधीजी के समर्थन में हजारों किसान एकत्र हो गए। सभी वकील भी उनके साथ जेल जाने को तैयार हो गए। जब गाँधीजी ने देखा कि सारी जनता उनके साथ सरकारी नीति का विरोध करने और जेल जाने को तैयार है तब उन्होंने घोषणा की कि “चम्पारण की लड़ाई जीत ली गई है।”
