The author had learnt how to swim. But he was not sure that all his fear had left. He decided to overcome his fear of water. So he went to Lake Wentworth in New Hampshire, dived off a dock at Triggs Islands and swam two miles across the lake to Stamp Act Island. He swam the various types, as, crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke and backstroke. When he was in the middle of the lake and put his face under water and saw nothing but bottomless water, he got a little frightened. But, he laughed the terror away. Yet he had residual doubts. So he camped in the high meadow by the side of Warm Lake. The next day he stripped, dived into the lake, and swam across to the other shore and back. He shouted with joy and Gilbert Peak returned the echo. Thus the author conquered his old terror.
लेखक तैरना सीख चुका था। परन्तु वह आश्वस्त नहीं था कि उसका सारा डर, समाप्त हो गया था। उसने अपने पानी के डर पर विजय पाने का निश्चय किया। अतः वह न्यू हैम्पशायर में वैण्टवर्थ झील पर गया, उसने ट्रिग्स टापू से छलांग लगाई और स्टाम्प एक्ट टापू तक झील में दो मील तैरा। वह भिन्न-भिन्न मुद्राओं में तैरा जैसे- क्राउल स्ट्रोक, ब्रेस्ट स्ट्रोक, साइड स्ट्रोक, बैक स्ट्रोक आदि (ये तैरने की अलग-अलग मुद्राएँ हैं)। जब वह झील के बीच में था तथा जब उसने पानी में डुबकी लगाई और अथाह पानी के अतिरिक्त कुछ न देखा तो उसे थोड़ा डर लगा। लेकिन लेखक ने डर को हँसी में उड़ा दिया। फिर भी कुछ संदेह बचे थे। अतः वह वार्म लेक के किनारे ऊँचे. घास के मैदान में तम्बू लगाकर ठहरा। अगली सुबह उसने कपड़े उतारे, झील में छलांग लगाई और दूसरे किनारे तक तैर कर गया और वापस आया। वह खुशी से चिल्लाया और गिलबर्ट शिखर ने प्रतिध्वनि की। इस तरह लेखक ने अपने पुराने भय से मुक्ति पाई।
