When Najab was staring at Fatimah, she caught him looking at her and laughed back. And in the evening when Fatimah repeated the performance and her face flooded with excitement as if she dared him to take the next step, he took her in his arms. Thus, he fell into love. He flung his arms around her in a reckless dizzy moment. He promised her that he would come again. She did not believe his word because he had answered the question that she had not asked. He promised that the next time, he would come alone with no father or uncle to cramp his style. And as he left, he looked behind to find her gaze following him, her eyes like a pair of storm lanterns in the dark. In fact, it was love at first sight for both of them.
जब फातिमा ने नजब को अपनी ओर देखते हुए पाया तो प्रत्युत्तर में वह भी हँस पड़ी। और शाम को भी जब फातिमा ने उसी व्यवहार को दोहराया (दुबारा मुस्कराई) और उसका चेहरा उत्तेजना से लाल हो गया मानो वह उसे आगे कदम बढ़ाने को ललकार रही हो, तो उसने उसे बाहों में ले लिया। इस प्रकार से वह उससे प्यार कर बैठा। ऐसे ही असावधान और पागलपन-भरे क्षणों में उसने (नज़ब ने अपनी बाँहें उसके गले में डाल दीं। उसने उससे वायदा किया कि वह फिर लौटकर आएगा। उसने इस पर विश्वास नहीं किया क्योंकि उसने उस प्रश्न का उत्तर दे दिया था जो उसने पूछा ही नहीं था। उसने वायदा किया कि अगली बार अकेला आएगा, न पिता और न ही चाचा साथ होंगे जो उसके लिए बाधा बनेंगे। और जब वह रवाना हुआ, तो उसने पीछे मुड़कर देखा तो पाया कि वह उसे टकटकी लगाकर देख रही थी, अंधेरे में उसकी आँखें तूफान में जलने वाली लालटेन के प्रकाश की तरह चमक रही थी। वस्तुतः उन दोनों के लिए यह प्रथम दृष्टि में प्रेम होना था।
