The Headmaster Michael Obi closed the path that passed across the school compound. The village priest suggested reopening the path but Michael refused to do so. According to Obi, it was a baseless idea and the whole purpose of the school was to eradicate just such beliefs. He did not allow the reopening of the path. Three days later a young woman died in the village in childbirth. A diviner was consulted who prescribed heavy sacrifices to pacify ancestors who were insulted by the fence. Next day the beautiful hedges were torn up right around the school, the flowers were trampled to death and one of the school buildings was pulled down. It was reported that the misguided zeal of the new headmaster had caused a tribal-war situation between the school and the village.
प्रधानाध्यापक माइकल ओबी ने विद्यालय के मैदान में से होकर गुजरने वाले रास्ते को बन्द कर दिया। गाँव के पादरी ने माइकल से उस रास्ते को पुनः खोलने का सुझाव दिया पर माइकल ने ऐसा करने से मना कर दिया। ओबी के अनुसार यह एक निराधार विचार था तथा विद्यालय का उद्देश्य ऐसे विश्वासों को नष्ट करना था। उसने रास्ते को दुबारा खोलने से मना कर दिया। तीन दिन बाद गाँव में प्रसव के दौरान एक नवयुवती की मृत्यु हो। गई। एक शगुनियाँ से परामर्श लिया गया जिसने बाड़ से अपमानित पूर्वजों की शान्ति के लिए भारी बलिदान करने की सलाह दी। अगले दिन विद्यालय के चारों ओर की सुन्दर बाड़ों के टुकड़े-टुकड़े कर दिए गए, फूलों को कुचल कर नष्ट कर दिया गया और विद्यालय के एक भवन को ढहा दिया गया। यह रिपोर्ट की गई कि नये प्रधानाध्यापक का भ्रमित जोश विद्यालय तथा गाँव के बीच एक जनजातीय झगड़े का कारण बना।
