After stealing the money from the crofter, the rattrap peddler walked into the woods to evade arrest. It was a big and confusing forest which he had gotten into. He tried to walk in a definite direction, but the paths twisted back and forth. He walked and walked without coming to the end of the wood, and finally, he realized that he had only been walking around in the same part of the forest. He recalled his thoughts about the world and the rat trap. He had let himself be fooled by a bait and had been caught. Darkness was already descending over the forest. This increased the danger, and also his gloom and despair. Finally, he saw no way out, and he sank down on the ground, exhausted, thinking that his last moment had come.
क्रॉफ्टर से पैसे चुराने के बाद, चूहेदानी बेचने वाला, पकड़े जाने से बचने के लिए जंगल में चला गया। यह एक बड़ा व भ्रामक जंगल था जिसमें वह प्रविष्ट हुआ था। वह एक निश्चित दिशा में चलने का प्रयास कर रहा था, किन्तु रास्ते आगे-पीछे मुड़ते रहे। वह चलता रहा किन्तु जंगल के छोर तक नहीं पहुँच सका, व अंततः उसे आभास हो गया कि वह जंगल के एक ही भाग में इधर-उधर घूमता रहा था। वह संसार व चूहेदानी के विषय में अपने विचार स्मरण करने लगा। उसने लुभावने चारे के लिए स्वयं को मूर्ख बनने दिया था व वह पकड़ा गया था। जंगल में अंधकार छा रहा था। इससे खतरा एवं उसकी निराशा व उदासी बढ़ रही थी। अंततः उसे बचने का कोई रास्ता नहीं सूझा तथा वह भूमि पर थककर गिर गया और यह सोचने लगा कि उसका अंतिम समय आ गया था।
