Captain Hagberd was suffering from obsession for the bereavement of his son. His son left home when he was barely 14 years of age. He was left without any work after retirement except to ponder over things and events of past and optimistic behaviour for future. The loss of his son and then the death of his wife created a vaccum in his life which affected his brain. The first sign of mental instability was his shifting from Colchester (UK) to Colebrook. He then advertised his pain among masses. His loneliness made him eccentric. He was very much disturbed for his lost son. He was sure that his son would be back home the next day.
कप्तान हैगबर्ड अपने पुत्र के वियोग से मानसिक रूप से पीड़ित था। जब उसके पुत्र ने घर छोड़ा तब वह मात्र 14 वर्ष की अवस्था में ही था। वह सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद कुछ भी काम नहीं करता था सिवाय इसके कि पिछली घटनाओं और वस्तुओं पर चिन्तन-मनन करना और भविष्य के लिए आशावादी व्यवहार रखना। उसके पुत्र के खो जाने तथा पत्नी की मृत्यु ने उसके जीवन में शून्यता भर दी थी जिससे उसके मस्तिष्क पर भी प्रभाव पड़ा। मानसिक अस्थिरता का पहला चिह्न उसका कोलचेस्टर (UK) से कोलबुक में आकर बसना था। उसके बाद में उसने अपने दुःख को जनता तक विज्ञापित कराया। उसके एकाकीपन ने उसे सनकी बना दिया था। वह अपने खोए हुऐ पुत्र के लिये बेहद परेशान था। उसे पक्का विश्वास था कि ‘कल’ उसका बेटा घर वापिस अवश्य आ जायेगा
