Captain Hagberd is obsessed about Harry, his son, who had left home in his teens, about 16 years ago. Bessie has a tyrant father and she is living like a caged bird cruelly treated frequenlty by the abuses of her father. Her father is dependent on her. She looks Captain Hagberd as a friend, civilised, and compassionate to her. She also knows that Captain cannot live in solitude without her. Hence she began to share Hagberd’s insanity regarding his son. Whatever Mr Hagberd shared with her, she listened to him silently and sympathetically.
कैप्टन हैगबर्ड अपने पुत्र हैरी के लिये अत्यधिक परेशान हैं जो 16 साल पूर्व वह अपनी किशोरावस्था में घर छोड़कर चला गया था। बेसी के पिता एक घरेलू निरंकुश हैं और वह एक पिंजड़े के पक्षी की तरह रह रही है तथा हमेशा पिता की गाली-गलौच से पीड़ित है। उसके पिता उस पर आश्रित हैं। वह हैगबर्ड को एक मित्र, सभ्य नागरिक, विनीत और कृपालु मनुष्य के रूप में देखती है। वह यह भी जानती है कि कैप्टन हैगबर्ड उसके बिना अकेले नहीं रह सकते। इस प्रकार वह उसके पुत्र के सम्बन्ध में हैगबर्ड के पागलपन में भागीदार बनने लगी। मि. हैगबर्ड उससे जो भी बातें करता, वह उसे शान्तिपूर्वक और सहानुभूतिपूर्वक सुनती।
