Captain Hagberd is the main character of this story. He was a seafarer, captain of a ship which belonged to a coal company. But he was always home sick and did not like the sea life. Thus as soon as he retires he buys a plot of land, builds two cottages at Colebrook. He treats his son very cruelly. His son leaves his home at the age of fourteen. He settles in Colebrook because he was last seen here and he hopes that his son must return Colebrook one day. He develops a whimsical thought that his son will come back tomorrow but does not even recognise him when his son returns at the end.
कप्तान हैग्बर्ड इस कहानी का मुख्य पात्र है। वह एक नाविक, एक जहाज का कप्तान था जो कि एक कोयला कम्पनी का था। लेकिन वह हमेशा अपने घर के लिये परेशान रहता था और समुद्री जीवन पसन्द नहीं करता था। इसलिये जैसे ही वह सेवा निवृत्त होता है वह कोलब्रुक में प्लाट खरीदता है और दो झोपड़ी बनाता है। वह अपने पुत्र से निर्दयता पूर्वक व्यवहार करता है। उसका पुत्र चौदह वर्ष की अवस्था में उसका घर छोड़ देता है। वह कोलबुक में बस जाता है क्योंकि उसके पुत्र को वहाँ पर अंन्तिम बार देखा गया था और वह उम्मीद करता है कि उसका पुत्र कोलब्रुक एक दिन अवश्य लौटेगा। वह एक सनकी आशावादी धारणा पाल लेता है कि उसका लड़का कल उसके पास लौट आयेगा लेकिन अन्त में जब उसका बेटा लौटता है तब उसे पहचानता भी नहीं है।
