Mountaineering means climbing higher and higher on the peaks of mountains. Mountain climbing is full of risks and dangers. It is more dangerous than hunting a lion from a machan. There is hair breath distance between life and death. It is not a child’s play. One has to learn a lot before starting climbing a mountain.
During the summer vacation, I attended a mountaineering camp. In the camp, the trainers were highly experienced. They were all encouraging. They made us run so fast that we became very tired. They kept us in the severe climates from very hot to very cold. We were kept in rooms where the air was thin and breathing was hard.
They taught us to bind the rope around our waist. They told us what the tightenning and loosening of the rope meant. We learnt the signals sent by the leading climber and the chasing climber. They focussed on developing courage.
पर्वतारोहण का अर्थ है पहाड़ की अधिकाधिक ऊँची चोटियों पर चढ़ना। पर्वतारोहण खतरों से भरा होता है। एक शेर के मचान से शिकार करने से भी यह अधिक जोखिम वाला और खतरों से भरपूर होता है। मृत्यु और जीवन के बीच बाल भर की दूरी होती है। यह बच्चों का खेल नहीं है। पहाड़ पर चढ़ना आरम्भ करने से पहले हमें बहुत कुछ सीखना होता है।।
गर्मियों की छुट्टियों में मैंने एक पर्वतारोही कैम्प में शिक्षण प्राप्त किया। शिविर में शिक्षण देने वाले बहुत ही अनुभवी थे। वे सभी प्रोत्साहन देने वाले थे। उन्होंने हमें अत्यधिक गर्मी और अत्यधिक ठण्ड के वातावरण में रखा–हमें इतना दौड़ाया गया कि हम पूर्णत: थक कर चूर-चूर हो गये। हमें ऐसे कमरों में रखा गया जहाँ बहुत कम हवा थी और श्वांस लेना बहुत कठिन था।
उन्होंने हमें अपनी कमर के चारों ओर रस्सी बाँधनी सिखाई। उन्होंने हमें सिखाया कि रस्सी को ढीला करने और कसने का क्या अर्थ होता है। हमने यह भी सीखा कि आगे चलने वाले पर्वतारोही का संकेत और पीछे चलने वाले पर्वतारोही के संकेत किस प्रकार के होते हैं और उन संकेतों का क्या अर्थ होता है। उन्होंने साहस की भावना को विकसित करने पर बल दिया।
